Portrait of a co-founder

My name is Corinne and I am one of the co-founders of the association LES CREATURES TERRIENNES. I compost in my Parisian apartment (without balcony) since the beginning of July 2020. At home, we are three people including a vegetarian. Since we compost, we have reduced the size of the garbage can of waste that is not sorted and we very rarely lower it.

My compost box is a cardboard recovery box. It has a capacity of 41 liters (size: 37 cm X 37 cm X 30 cm). It can compost up to 1.2 kilos of biowaste per week. The carbonaceous materials that I poured into it, at the beginning, are coconut fiber and vegetable charcoal. At the time of the photo, I had installed it in the kitchen.

By the end of March 2021, it had composted 45 kg of plant biowaste. She weighed 10 kilos. I feed it 1 or 2 times a week, when the bioseau is filled.

My advice...

Compost smells like humus (especially after being mixed). I love this smell but I still aerating after each mixture.

In the summer, a few midges landed on the tea towel, I moved them away by pouring a few drops of lemon essential oil on the tea towel.

For me, the most important gesture for the success of composting is to cut the waste into small pieces, for example a cube of 1 cm side.

Cat and compost box!

During the holidays, we had left our cat a few days, at home, without heating in our absence. As the compost heats up a little, he lay on the tea towel to warm up. This is not conducive to composting because it cups it. I moved the box to avoid this type of inconvenience.
